What is Web of Science?
Web of Science (Science Citation Index) is a comprehensive academic literature database, an information service platform developed and maintained by Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters). It supports literature searches in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities, with data sourced from journals, books, patents, conference proceedings, and online resources (including free open resources). Web of Science is highly valued in the academic community for its extensive coverage of literature and citation analysis functions. By searching and tracking the citation relationships of literature, researchers can assess the impact of papers, discover related research, and identify potential collaborators. In addition, Web of Science offers other features such as author analysis, institutional analysis, and citation reports, etc.

Web of Science is a product based on WEB developed by Thomson Scientific (Thomson Scientific Information Group), a large-scale, comprehensive, multidisciplinary, core journal citation index database. It is an important database for obtaining global academic information, containing more than 13,000 authoritative and influential academic journals with content covering natural sciences, engineering technology, biomedicine, and other fields. Given that it includes the references cited in papers, through its unique citation index, users can retrieve detailed content and citation status of articles, patents, or several keywords as search terms, track their latest progress; trace the origin and history of a research literature or research direction, which can be both wider, newer, and more in-depth, and more refined. Influenced by Dr. Eugene Garfield, the inventor of the research literature citation index, Web of Science has become the most powerful research engine in the world, providing your library with first-class publications and citation data to ensure the reliability of discovery, access, and evaluation.
Our multidisciplinary platform connects regional, professional, data, and patent indexes with the global original citation index Web of Science Core Collection. Our comprehensive platform allows you to cross disciplines and time, tracking various ideas from nearly 1.75 billion cited literature among over 155 million records. The Web of Science platform contains more than 34,000 journals, which can help you achieve a truly comprehensive search.
Through the Web of Science platform, you can access unparalleled world-class research literature, which is linked to carefully selected core journals and can discover unique new information through carefully recorded metadata and citation relationships.
As research data continues to grow, revealing meaningful connections between past and present research, collaborators, funding, and research impact is a huge opportunity. As long as you start with the highest quality data, you will be confident in your field and decision-making.
Database classification
1.
WOS Core Collection (Web of Science Core Collection):It is a multidisciplinary academic literature abstract index database with 10 sub-databases.► 3 journal citation sub-databases – Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE, 1900 to present), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI, Social Sciences Citation Index), and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI, Arts & Humanities Citation Index). Data comes from more than 21,000 high-quality peer-reviewed journals in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.
► 2 conference paper citation sub-databases – Conference Proceedings Citation Index – Science (CPCI-S), Conference Proceedings Citation Index – Social Science & Humanities (CPCI-SSH). Data comes from international conference proceedings in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.&► 2 book citation databases – Book Citation Index – Science (BKCI-S), Book Citation Index – Social Sciences & Humanities (BKCI-SSH). Data comes from more than 100,000 academic monographs and series published globally since 2005, with in-depth indexing of chapters and full revelation of their citation status.&► 2 chemical databases: Current Chemical Reactions contains one-step or multi-step new synthetic methods from journal and patent literature, while Index Chemicus contains novel organic compounds reported in influential journals worldwide. The two chemical databases can be searched using structural formulas, compounds, and reaction details and bibliographic information.
► Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI): To timely reflect the rapidly increasing global scientific and academic activities, ESCI includes thousands of journals that are currently under strict review and may eventually enter the above three journal citation databases. The focus is on some important regional journals, emerging research fields, and interdisciplinary fields. Therefore, ESCI serves as a useful supplement to the above three journal citation databases.&2.
Biological Abstracts, Biosis previews&: Includes research results in various fields of life sciences from journals, conferences, books, and patents (if the journal is included in PMC/Medline, it will have an advantage) etc.
3.
CSCD
(China Science Citation Database):It is a Chinese journal index; it includes more than 1,200 Chinese and English core journals and excellent journals published in China since 1989, covering disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, biology, agricultural science, medicine, engineering technology, environmental science, and management science. The database supports both Chinese and English searches, and can be searched using bibliographic information of included literature or by the authors and sources of cited literature.4. Data Citation Index
(DCI):Provides access to a global entry point for high-quality research data. Through DCI, users can search millions of records in hundreds of evaluated data repositories in the fields of science, social sciences, and humanities, with each record linking to the data repository.5.Derwent Innovations Index(DII):
It is the world's largest patent literature database, covering patent literature publicly disclosed by about 60 intellectual property organizations, divided into three sub-databases: Chemical, Electrical & Electronic, and Engineering. It provides fast and accurate patent information and patent citation information retrieval.6.MEDLINE: It is a bibliographic database compiled by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in the United States, covering the fields of biomedicine and life sciences.
7.FSTA: Journals on food science, food nutrition, and food technology can apply.8.&Inspec:
Journals in physics, engineering, computer science, and manufacturing can apply; the Inspec database published by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) contains scientific literature on physics, electrical and electronic technology, computer and control engineering, information technology, and mechanical manufacturing from around the world.9.KCI-korea journal database:
Korean academic journal database.10.SciELO Citation Index (Scientific Electronic Library Online):Includes open access journal articles with certain international academic impact published in Latin America, Spain, Portugal, the Caribbean, and South Africa, etc., and provides links to full texts.Web of Science Advanced Search
Web of Science database is an important resource widely used in the academic community, providing researchers with a vast amount of academic literature and information. However, due to the large amount of content in the database, conventional search methods may not meet the specific information needs of researchers. Therefore, the advanced search section of the Web of Science database has become an indispensable tool. This post will focus on the advanced search section to help teachers and students better utilize this feature.Advanced Search Introduction Step.01
(1) The advanced search section allows users to use more search rules and operators to precisely define their search needs. (2) The advanced search section provides a rich set of search rules and operators, such as AND, OR, NOT, etc., enabling users to more finely control search conditions.(3) The advanced search section allows users to search using specific field tags and fields. (4) The advanced search section also provides advanced filtering and sorting options, allowing users to filter and sort search results based on specific conditions.
Step.02Functions and usage of advanced search(1) Introduction to core search rules and operators
Wildcard search
Search only in the title of the literature.
For example: TI=”Application of ATAD technology” (search for literature with the title “Application of ATAD technology”)
3)
Author
(AU = Author):Use when you know the name of an author of a literature or want to find all works by a specific author. For example: AU=johnson m* (search for literature with the surname Johnson)
4)
Publication Name
(SO = Source):Used to search for specific journals, conference proceedings, or other publications.(TI = Title):
Search within the titles of documents only.
For example: TI="Application of ATAD technology" (Search for documents titled "Application of ATAD technology")
3)Author(AU = Author):
