How is Watsonx.ai?
For many years, IBM has been at the forefront of breakthrough AI technology. From the world's first chess-playing program to building AI supercomputers in the cloud, we have been committed to driving the development of AI technology. Today, we have one of the most comprehensive enterprise-level AI solutions. Our Watson suite has been applied to over 100 million users across 20 industries, while IBM Research's professional team continues to advance the development of cutting-edge technologies.
AI has brought positive business results to enterprises. It has made our supply chain stronger, protected critical enterprise data from cyber attacks, and provided seamless experiences for millions of industry customers. However, foundational models based on generative AI will only be the beginning of major changes, especially as we strive to make this technology more accessible. At IBM, we believe it's time to put the power of AI into the hands of various "AI builders," whether they are data scientists, developers, or everyday users who have never written code.
WatsonX is IBM's next-generation AI platform, designed specifically for this purpose. It provides self-service access to high-quality, trusted data, allowing users to collaborate on a single platform, build and refine new generative AI foundational models, and traditional machine learning systems. Early use cases include digital labor, IT automation, application modernization, security, and sustainability.
WatsonX Components
WatsonX is composed of three components: watsonx.ai, watsonx.data, and watsonx.governance. It provides advanced machine learning, data management, and generative AI capabilities to train, validate, adjust, and deploy AI systems in a fast and trusted manner across the enterprise. It can support the entire data and AI lifecycle, from data preparation to model development, deployment, and monitoring. We believe it can expand and accelerate the impact of the most advanced AI on every enterprise.
WatsonX.ai is an AI development platform designed for today's and tomorrow's businesses. It combines the capabilities of IBM Watson Studio with the latest generative AI, enabling data scientists, developers, and data analysts to build, run, and deploy AI applications based on machine learning.
The core of WatsonX.ai is the principle of trust. As AI becomes more widespread, enterprises need to ensure that their models do not produce illusions or inappropriate language when interacting with customers. We have established appropriate rigor, processes, technologies, and tools to adapt agilely to the ever-changing legal and regulatory environment. WatsonX.ai allows users to access high-quality, pre-trained, and proprietary IBM enterprise-level foundational models that focus on specific domains and strictly pay attention to data collection, sources, and quality. In addition, IBM also provides various open-source models through WatsonX.ai.
Trust is part of the equation, and accessibility is the second part. To make AI truly transformative, as many people as possible should benefit from it. For this reason, we have considered user-friendliness in the design of WatsonX.ai. WatsonX.ai is not only suitable for data scientists and developers but also allows business users to access it through an easy-to-use interface that responds to natural language prompts for different tasks.
In the Prompt Lab, users can experiment with models by entering prompts for various tasks, such as summarizing scripts or performing sentiment analysis on documents. Depending on the task, WatsonX.ai will allow users to select foundational models from a dropdown menu. Developers can build workflows in our ModelOps environment using APIs, SDKs, and libraries to manage machine learning models from development to deployment. Advanced users will be able to use our tuning development platform to customize models using labeled data and create new trustworthy models.
At IBM, we believe that language is just the beginning of foundational models. We are also building models trained on different types of business data, including code, time series data, tabular data, geospatial data, and IT event data. The initial foundational models include language models (LLM), geospatial data models, molecular models, and code models, which will be provided to selected customers in the test version.
WatsonX.data aims to expand and manage AI across the entire enterprise and produce influential results. It is a data storage solution built on the open lakehouse architecture and can run in both local and multi-cloud environments.
WatsonX.data optimizes all data, analytics, and AI workloads and combines the flexibility of data lakes with the performance of data warehouses to help enterprises expand their data in any location for data analysis and AI. Through workload optimization, organizations can reduce data warehouse costs by up to 50% by using WatsonX.data. Users can access data through a single entry point and share metadata layers in cloud and local environments. WatsonX.data also has built-in governance, security, and automation features that enable data scientists and developers to use managed enterprise data for model training and adjustment and address enterprise compliance and security issues throughout the data ecosystem.
WatsonX.data enables enterprises to build reliable AI models on multi-cloud architectures and achieve automation of the AI lifecycle, fully leveraging interoperability with IBM and third-party services.
WatsonX.governance is used to establish trust in the AI lifecycle of the enterprise. It is an automated data and model lifecycle solution for formulating strategies, allocating decision-making authority, and ensuring that the organization is responsible for risk and investment decisions.
WatsonX.governance uses software automation to enhance customers' ability to reduce risk, meet regulatory requirements, and address ethical issues. It enables customers to automate and integrate multiple tools, applications, and platforms and record the sources of datasets, models, related metadata, and pipelines. By providing mechanisms that help ensure safety and protect customer privacy, and by proactively detecting model bias and drift, WatsonX.governance helps organizations meet ethical standards and actively manage risk and reputation. Regulations can be converted into rules and business processes to help ensure compliance and maintain stakeholders' visibility and collaboration through customizable reports and dashboards.
By injecting WatsonX.ai foundational models into all of IBM's core AI and automation products as well as consulting practices, IBM is collaborating with customers to bring AI into their businesses. This includes Watson Assistant and Watson Orchestrate, which have been enhanced with NLP foundational models to improve employee efficiency and customer service experience. It also includes Watson Code Assistant, which uses generative AI to allow developers to automatically generate code with simple instructions. Additionally, there are Watson AIOps Insights and IBM Environmental Intelligence Suite, which are enhanced with foundational models based on code and language processing to support IT operations and environmental risk management.
Placing trust at the core of AI strategy is crucial. At IBM, we designed WatsonX following principles of trust such as explainability, fairness, robustness, transparency, and privacy. We believe that a trustworthy AI future is not only possible but already here. It is an exciting time to let AI take effect and create a better world together!
