What is Vocaloid?

Vocaloid is an AI voice synthesis software co-developed by Yamaha and Crypton Future Media in Japan. It can create virtual singers and generate music, attracting a large number of fans since its launch in 2004. Over the years, it has become a part of Japanese culture, sparking interest and attention.

Vocaloid Historical Versions

VOCALOID is an electronic voice synthesis software independently developed by Yamaha Corporation of Japan. By inputting pitch and lyrics, it can synthesize singing voices close to human sounds. As of December 2022, the program is divided into six generations: VOCALOID (V1), VOCALOID 2, VOCALOID 3, VOCALOID 4, VOCALOID 5, VOCALOID 6 (VOCALOID: AI). The traditional voice bank of the software was initially based on the "Frequency-domain Singing Articulation Splicing and Shaping" technology developed and authorized for use by Yamaha by Music Technology Group (MTG, an institution under Pompeu Fabra University), collecting different human voice samples to create voice libraries (sound sources/sound banks) for sound synthesis. VOCALOID: AI uses neural network synthesis technology to achieve more natural sound synthesis.

Origin of the Name Vocaloid

The name VOCALOID is composed of "vocal (singing)" and the suffix "-oid." The suffix "-oid" means "similar to" or "shaped like." When combined with "human," it becomes "humanoid (having human characteristics, humanoid)," and when combined with the Greek word for man, "andr," it becomes "android (robot)." Therefore, VOCALOID means "something that can sing."

However, there is another explanation for the name origin: "Vocal·Android (singing·robot) = VOCALOID (ボーカロイド)," meaning "a singing robot."
