About VALL-E
VALL-E is a language modeling method for text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis. Specifically, we use discrete codes derived from existing neural audio codec models to train a neural codec language model (named VALL-E) and view TTS as a conditional language modeling task, rather than a continuous signal regression as previous work. During the pre-training phase, we expand the TTS training data to 60K hours of English speech, hundreds of times more than existing systems. VALL-E exhibits contextual learning ability, which can be used to synthesize high-quality personalized speech with just a 3-second registration recording of an unseen speaker as a voice prompt. Experimental results show that VALL-E significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art zero-shot TTS systems in terms of speech naturalness and speaker similarity. Additionally, we find that VALL-E can preserve the speaker's emotions and the auditory environment of the voice prompt in the synthesis.

Text-to-Voice Conversion
This is the latest text-to-speech (TTS) technology based on a language model from Microsoft Research, which can mimic anyone's voice with just 3 seconds of audio sample while retaining the speaker's emotions and voice environment. Sounds amazing, right? Let's explore how it works!
First, let's understand how traditional TTS technology works. Generally, TTS technology involves converting text into audio waveforms, which involves two steps:Converting text into a mel-spectrogram, which is a representation of the frequency and time of the sound signal;Converting the mel-spectrogram into an audio waveform, which can be achieved using neural networks or vocoders (vocoder). Although this method can generate relatively natural speech, it also has some drawbacks: such as requiring large amounts of training data, insufficient flexibility in controlling the speaker and content, and difficulty in achieving personalized and diverse voice.
So, how does Vall E address these issues? The core idea of Vall E is to view TTS as a conditional language model (conditional language model) task rather than a continuous signal regression (continuous signal regression) task. That is, it does not directly generate audio waveforms but generates a discrete codec code, which is then decoded into audio waveforms by a neural network codec. This codec code is provided by a technology called EnCodec, which can compress and encode audio signals with very few bits while maintaining high quality.
Vall E can not only simulate the speaker's voice characteristics but also retain the speaker's emotions and voice environment.
For example, if you give it a recording of a speaker in a happy, sad, angry, surprised, bored, or any other emotional state as a voice prompt, it will generate speech in that emotional state; if you give it a recording of a speaker in a classroom, office, park, restaurant, or any other scene as a voice prompt, it will generate speech in that scene.
What are the possible uses of vall-E?Vall E has a wide range of applications, such as zero-shot TTS, voice editing, content creation, etc. Zero-shot TTS refers to the ability to generate any content's speech without the need for a pre-trained speaker model, just a brief recording.
Voice Editing. Vall E can modify the content of speech by changing the text, which is very useful for those who want to correct or add or delete some information in the speech. For example, you can use Vall E to modify your speech draft or recording notes to make them more in line with your intentions or needs. For example: it can be used for voice-acting in short videos; you can input your own voice data, clone your own voice, and then input text to output your own voice reading;
For companies, personal studios, and even individuals, Vall E can be used for voice acting, English reading, and other related tasks; it can greatly reduce costs and improve efficiency; for example, some recording studios can use this technology for voice synthesis; and it can be modified at any time, making it very convenient;
Content Creation. Vall E can combine with other generative AI models like GPT to create interesting or valuable voice content, which is very interesting for those who want to attract or influence their audience through voice. For example, you can use Vall E and GPT-4 to generate a poem or a story and read them in the voice you like. Of course, you can also write a novel and then use Vall E to convert it into an audiobook.
