Introduction

Runway was originally a platform for creators to use machine learning tools intuitively without any coding experience. It's used for processing video, audio, text, and other multimedia types. Now, Runway's AI Magic Tools offer over 30 AI tools. Users can create and publish pre-trained machine learning models on Runway for applications like generating realistic images or videos. Additionally, users can train their own models and import new models from GitHub. Recently, on March 23, 2023, Runway launched Gen-2 model c, allowing users to generate video content from text, images, and video clips.

Runway Features

Runway offers various features, with video editing being its main focus. Its basic operations are similar to Capcut, but it adds three main AI-assisted features in the Magic Tools AI plugin:

1. Green Screen: Through AI calculations, it can cut out selected objects in green screen style and automatically help users fill in the outline that fits the theme.
2. Inpainting: Similar to Photoshop's image repair feature, it removes the subject within the selected area manually and fills it with the surrounding background through AI calculations.
3. Motion Tracking: Select a subject in a video, and when adding other effects (like titles), it can follow the movement of the subject.

Besides video editing, Runway also provides image-related features. The most significant one is text to Image, which can generate images with high clarity and resolution. However, the accuracy in real-world application needs improvement. For example, when generating images of a Husky (prompt: a haski dog) and an Alaskan Malamute (prompt: an alaskan malamute), the generated images may not be accurate and could even have a "stitching monster" feel.

Runway offers multiple features in audio processing, including:

• Clean Audio (Noise Removal): Eliminates noise and interference in audio through AI algorithms, improving audio quality.
• Remove Silence (Silence Removal): Automatically detects silent parts in audio and removes them to shorten the audio duration.
• Generate Transcript (Transcription): Converts audio to text format through voice recognition technology.
• Generate Subtitles (Subtitle Generation): Converts the transcribed text of audio to subtitle format for easy viewing by users.

While these features may seem similar to those of Krisp and Descript, Runway uses its unique AI technology to provide more accurate and efficient audio processing experiences.

Runway's main advantage lies in its leading AI capabilities and corresponding Magic Tools. This allows Runway to carve out a niche in the creative tool field and has the potential to replace traditional post-production software. Particularly in video post-production, tasks like Green Screen (green screen removal) and Inpainting (image repair) often require a lot of time and effort. Runway can significantly shorten processing time with the help of AI tools, completing work with similar effects.

Runway Advantages

There are two examples on the official website that demonstrate Runway's advantages. One example is a comparison of person selection. Using Runway's simple point-and-click and remote computer processing, the task can be completed in just 5 seconds, while using traditional post-production software's Rotobrush requires multiple manual treatments and corrections, taking about 20 seconds.

Another example is a comparison of the entire video production process. They shot a video of a young man doing a somersault in an office (about ten to fifteen seconds) and needed to cut the person out of the background and add a flame effect. In the comparison, four editors were involved, with two using traditional post-production software (one using a digitizing tablet, one using traditional software), and the other two using AI software (Runway and Adobe). The two using AI software completed the production and export in just 6 minutes, with Runway's results being better. The two using traditional tools only completed a few frame removals, far behind in progress.
