What is NumPy?
NumPy, short for Numerical Python, is a widely-used extension library in Python. It provides high-level, large-scale multidimensional array and matrix operations, and offers a rich set of mathematical functions for array operations. As one of the most useful tools in Python, NumPy can efficiently handle large volumes of data. Its strength lies in providing a multitude of functions for array processing, allowing complex mathematical operations on ndarray (multidimensional arrays) without relying on loops or derivation.

Compared to Python's built-in sequences, ndarray uses less memory. A deep understanding of NumPy's ndarray features helps in more efficient use of other scientific computing packages like Pandas. NumPy also provides detailed usage methods for its built-in functions.
NumPy is a Python package consisting of multidimensional array objects and a collection of routines for handling arrays. Its predecessor was Numeric, developed by Jim Hugunin. Jim Hugunin also developed another package called Numarray, which had some additional features. In 2005, Travis Oliphant integrated the features of Numarray into Numeric, creating the NumPy package. This open-source project has received support and participation from many contributors.
With NumPy, developers can perform various operations, including:
- Arithmetic and logical operations on arrays.
- Fourier transformations and routines for image processing.
- Operations related to linear algebra. NumPy has many built-in functions for linear algebra and random number generation.
Typically, NumPy is used alongside SciPy (Scientific Python) and Matplotlib (a plotting library). This combination is widely used to replace MatLab, becoming a popular technical computing platform. Python is considered a more modern and comprehensive programming language as an alternative to MatLab.
It is worth mentioning that NumPy is open-source, which is an additional advantage. Open-source code means that anyone can view, use, and contribute to the development of NumPy. This openness promotes the continuous development and improvement of NumPy, making it an important tool in the field of scientific computing.
