What is JAX?

JAX is an open-source Python library for machine learning and scientific computing from Google. Designed to be very similar to NumPy's API, it offers additional features and optimizations to run efficiently on CPUs, GPUs, and TPUs.

Project Address:https://github.com/google/jax

Documentation:https://jax.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

Quick Start Link:https://jax.readthedocs.io/en/latest/notebooks/quickstart.html

JAX's primary goal is to provide high-performance numerical computing and automatic differentiation, making scientific computing and machine learning more convenient and efficient.

Unlike NumPy, JAX has GPU and TPU acceleration capabilities and offers high-performance automatic differentiation. This facilitates model training and optimization in tasks like deep learning and gradient optimization. JAX compiles Python code into highly optimized kernels using the XLA compiler, enabling high-performance computing on various hardware.

In addition to numerical computing and automatic differentiation, JAX provides practical features like asynchronous, parallel, and distributed computing. It also integrates with common machine learning frameworks (like TensorFlow), allowing seamless collaboration and offering developers more choices and flexibility.

How is JAX?

So, what exactly is JAX? JAX is a high-performance automatic differentiation computing framework open-sourced by Google, developed for machine learning research and capable of running on CPUs, GPUs, and TPUs. JAX can be seen as a NumPy with GPU and TPU acceleration and automatic differentiation capabilities. Compared to NumPy, which does not support GPU or other hardware accelerators and lacks built-in reverse propagation support, JAX allows users to program at a high-level interface using their preferred accelerators.

Getting started with JAX is natural and simple, as many are already familiar with NumPy's syntax and conventions. JAX significantly reduces the learning burden for users. Currently, JAX supports installation or building on Linux (Ubuntu 16.04 or higher) and macOS (10.12 or higher) platforms, and Windows users can use JAX on CPU and GPU via the Windows Linux Subsystem. Developers can achieve high-performance scientific computing and deep learning applications on different hardware with JAX.

Advantages

High-Performance Computing: JAX utilizes the XLA compiler to compile Python code into highly optimized kernels, enabling high-performance computing on CPUs, GPUs, and TPUs. This makes JAX faster than pure NumPy and more efficient in handling large-scale data and complex computational tasks.

  • Hardware Acceleration Support: JAX natively supports GPU and TPU acceleration, making computation on these hardware possible. By leveraging hardware acceleration, computation speed and efficiency can be significantly improved, especially in deep learning and large-scale model training.
  • Automatic Differentiation: JAX provides powerful automatic differentiation capabilities, facilitating gradient computation in machine learning tasks. This is crucial for model training, optimization, and gradient descent, and is one of the core functionalities in deep learning research.
  • NumPy Compatibility: JAX's API is very similar to NumPy's, meaning developers familiar with NumPy can seamlessly migrate to JAX and directly use NumPy's code and tools. This compatibility makes JAX a powerful and easy-to-use tool, enabling quick adoption and application in existing projects.
  • Parallel and Distributed Computing: JAX supports parallel and distributed computing, allowing computation tasks to be accelerated using multiple CPU, GPU, or TPU devices. This makes efficient parallel computing on large-scale data and complex models possible, improving computational throughput and efficiency.
  • Asynchronous Computing Support: JAX has the capability for asynchronous computing, enabling non-blocking asynchronous operations during computation, which improves computational efficiency and resource utilization.
  • JAX is an open-source computing framework from Google that runs on CPUs, GPUs, and TPUs, described as a tool faster than NumPy with high-performance automatic differentiation capabilities, up to several tens of times faster than NumPy.

For many who are familiar with NumPy, TensorFlow, and PyTorch, JAX may still be relatively unknown. However, since its release, some users have tested and found that using JAX can increase the computational speed of NumPy by over thirty times.
